Sour Cream Donuts

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup (50 g) butter
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 cup sour cream
  • 3 cup (450 g) all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbs baking powder
  • shortening for frying

Steps

  1. Cream the butter and sugar together until light.
  2. Beat in eggs one at a time until smooth.
  3. Stir in sour cream.
  4. Sift together the dry ingredients and add to the wet mixture. Mix until it forms a soft dough and comes together smoothly.
  5. Add enough shortening to a pan or fryer to cover the donuts when melted (about 5 cm deep). Heat to 325 °F.
  6. Turn dough onto a heavily floured surface. Flour the top well and work together to a smooth ball.
  7. Roll out to 1.5 cm thick. Cut with a donut cutter, and set the pieces aside a few minutes. Re-roll the scraps and cut until all the dough is used.
  8. Deep fry in shortening until brown, about 3 minutes. Donuts will sink to the bottom and crack on top. When they float, they are done.
  9. Remove to a wire rack set over a drip tray. Let cool while frying the remainder.

Cool and cover on both sides with confectioners' sugar glaze.

Storage Instructions

Donuts don't store well, but can be frozen. Freeze the day they are made. Allow to thaw uncovered at room temperature.
